Mid-Coast Family Services
The Central Church and Mid-Coast Family Services has a long history of working together to serve our community. Mid-Coast Family Services is a non-profit agency with a mission to assist persons who have been impacted by family violence, homelessness, sexual assault, and substance abuse.
Each summer, they conduct a six-week long summer day camp for at-risk youth which is conducted at the Central building. Campers come from a variety of places, including low-income housing, shelters, and hotels. For many of the campers, the day-camp is the only camp they will ever experience. They receive breakfast, lunch, and snacks and participate in arts and crafts, recreation, and drug- and bullying- prevention activities. In addition to providing a site for camp, Central members often help with back-to-school clothes and supplies.
Central also supports Mid-Coast’s homeless program by funding a two-bedroom apartment which is used by homeless families as emergency shelter, which is referred to as Gateway for Families. A box is located in the foyer so that members can donate food, cleaning items, and other household goods for families who often have nothing to call their own.
The Central building is also used for other homeless activities such as a warming shelter and showers. When our south Texas weather turns frigid and it’s unsafe for our homeless friends to be outside, we set up cots and invite them inside. Central also makes our showers available year round for anyone who needs a warm shower.
